「〜てみる」は、いいかどうか試しに少しすると言うときに使う。

(Use ~てみる when a person tries something a little to see if he or she likes it)

Examples

  • おもしろそうなコンサートだったので、言ってみました
    (Since it seemed interesting, I went to the concert( to see what it was like))
  • ここの刺身はおいしいですよ。食べてみますか?
    (The sashimi here is good. Will you try it?)
  • A:あのレストランのカレー、おいしいですよ。
    (That restaurant’s curry is good.)
    B:そうですか。じゃ、今度食べてみます
    (Is that so? Well then I’ll try it next time)

Note: Related expression

A similar expression 「〜ようとする」means simply ” try to do s.t.”. WHen these two expressions are used in past tense, however, their meanings are not the same. For example, in the first (1) example below it means that Mr. Brown did put on Tom’s undershirt, whereas, (2) means that Mr. Brown tried to put it on, with the implication that he couldn’t or didn’t actually do it.
